Blue tit: Cyanistes caeruleus

Blue tits are cheerful visitors to our gardens. With their bright blue, yellow, white and green feathers, they are attractive little birds that feed on insects, caterpillars, seeds and nuts. They measure around 12cm and are half the size of a robin. They can be found in woodland, farmland, urban and suburban areas, and in winter family flocks join together in their quest to find food.

These delicate birds have a bright-blue cap, white face, black stripes across their eyes, a beautiful yellow breast and blue, green and white wings. They are regular visitors to garden feeders, where they tuck into mixed seeds, peanuts, sunflower hearts and fat balls – hanging upside down to get their food.

Blue tits start scouting around for nesting spots as early as January, beginning construction by late March. They plump for holes in trees and walls, and are rather partial to a carefully placed nest box where they often raise only a single brood of around seven to 14 birds each spring.

All birds can see ultra-violet light, and the blue tit’s head glows brightly under UV light. It is thought that this is a factor in how female birds choose their partner.
