Blackbird: Turdus merula

The blackbird is one of our most common birds and can be found in many gardens, parks and woodland across the county. Striking and melodious, the male has a black body with a vibrant orange/yellow beak and eye ring. Females, on the other hand, have a brown beak and are dark brown with streaks to the chest and throat.

Staple diets consist of a rich variety of insects and earthworms, with berries and fruit when it is in season. Blackbirds measure 24-25cm and are territorial in nature, defending areas featuring nest sites and feeding opportunities. The breeding season takes place from March to the end of July, when the female builds a nest in an area close to the ground. Blackbirds usually have two or three broods with a clutch of between three and five eggs, which are incubated by the female.

Chicks hatch two weeks later, fledge after another couple of weeks and are completely independent three weeks later.
